Desiree Davila of Rochester Hills, Michigan was two seconds short yesterday of becoming the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon in 26 years. Davila finished second to the winner from Kenya, the same country that produced the men’s winner, Geoffrey Mutai, who finished first in a time of 2 hours, 3 minutes and 2 seconds, the fastest marathon ever run and a Boston record.

The time didn't count as an official world record, however, because the Boston course doesn't qualify for world record consideration under IAAF rules. The last American woman to win the Boston Marathon was Lisa Larsen Widenback of Battle Creek in 1985.
